Clover men accused of deer hunting at night

Published: October 25, 2012

— Two men were arrested Thursday morning after a tip from a Clover homeowner led one of York County’s game wardens to discover the men were hunting deer at 4 a.m.

Hunting deer at night, even during hunting season, is illegal in South Carolina.

Pfc. Mark Ferrell with the state Department of Natural Resources said he was asleep when he got the tip and description of the vehicle the hunters were in.

To combat nighttime hunting, he said, “you got to be able to get up and get moving pretty quick.”

He pulled over a truck in Clover with 18-year-old Anthony Padon Murphy and 19-year-old Tyler James White inside, Ferrell said. Murphy and White admitted they were hunting deer and had attempted to shoot at least one deer near someone’s home.

The vehicle and a rifle were seized. Officials could not find the deer that Murphy and White allegedly shot at.

Ferrell said nighttime hunting is very dangerous and had the men missed their mark, they could have shot into the tipster’s home with people sleeping inside.
