No matter the opponent, the problems for the Clover Blue Eagles remain the same: too many mistakes on offense and too many big plays given up by the defense. Both cost them in their 44-17 loss to Fort Mill Friday night.
The big plays started right away for Fort Mill, as Rylan Wells found Josh Lafoe wide open down the middle from 66 yards to make it 7-0. Clover tied the game when Scott Jackson capped an 18-play, 80-yard drive with a 4-yard run.
A bad pitch by the Blue Eagles and a blocked punt set up the Yellow Jackets’ next two scores: a 28-yard field goal by Wells and a 13-yard run by Deryan Sanders. When Breshaun Simpson scored on a 2-yard run, Fort Mill had gained control of the game and a 24-7 lead.
Clover managed a 23-yard Evan Edmunds field goal as the first half expired.
The second half for Fort Mill was the Deryan Sanders show. He scored on receptions of 25 and 67 yards from Wells and on a 57-yard touchdown run. Sanders rushed for 97 yards on eight carries and had four catches for 144 yards.
Rylan Wells and Josh Lafoe also had big games for the Yellow Jackets. Wells was 7 of 9 for 245 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Lafoe pulled in three passes for 101 yards.
