Class A Division II playoffs

Blue Flashes make school history, advance to second round

Greenwood Index JournalNovember 3, 2012

— Christmas arrived about seven weeks early in Calhoun Falls on Friday night at Fulmer Stadium.

Ray Ray Cade’s 24-yard touchdown with 2:22 remaining lifted Calhoun Falls to a 24-22 win over Great Falls in the first-round of the Class A Division II playoffs. The Blue Flashes advanced to the second round for the first time in school history.

“It just lets our kids, and our community and our school know how far we’ve come this season,” Calhoun Falls coach David Campbell said. “I told our kids we need to make that statement (Friday night) and they came out and played a heck of a football game. And I think they did make that statement.”

The Blue Flashes benefitted from Great Falls’ turnovers. Eight times the Red Devils put the football on the ground, with Calhoun Falls recovering five fumbles.

Cade accounted for 107 yards in the second half after getting minus-17 on his first six carries. On his game-winning run, he bounced outside on a sweep play and dashed up the home sideline for the score, pointing a single finger to the sky as he burst across the goal line.

“I saw the outside, I saw daylight, and I said it’s time to get it,” Cade said of the run

His touchdown erased what had once been a 10-point Great Falls lead in the second half. The Blue Flashes (5-6) closed the game with 12 unanswered points.

The victory was revenge for a 37-0 thrashing that Great Falls administered to the Blue Flashes earlier this season. The Red Devils finished 4-7.

“This was a tough loss,” Great Falls coach Kenneth Schofield said. “We were down some players. There’s no excuses, we should’ve won this game, but we lost. But they’re a lot different ball team than we played the first time.”

A.J. Stradford tossed a pair of touchdown passes for Calhoun Falls, and ran for one. Cade also had a touchdown catch.

The Blue Flashes face off Hunter-Kinard-Tyler next Friday.
