Winthrop University’s “Livin’ La Vida Winthrop” weekend-long Homecoming celebration kicks off with an actual bang with student groups hosting a car smash on campus at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
The traditional Homecoming Party is Friday night at 9 p.m. with music from a Miami-based Reggae and funk band, Xperimento, a caricaturist, a photo booth, free food and a cash bar in the DiGiorgio Campus Center Ballroom.
Frank Ardaiolo, vice president of student life, is hosting an easy bike ride around the campus and surrounding neighborhoods on Saturday, departing from the Campus Green at 8:30 a.m.
Winthrop will host a tailgating party with kids activities and an alumni cookout at the Winthrop Coliseum, starting at 11 a.m.
Men’s basketball coach, Pat Kelsey, and his Eagles hit the court for Winthrop’s season opener at 4 p.m. against the Knights of St. Andrews University. Saturday’s matchup is Kelsey’s first regular season appearance as the university’s head coach.
Homecoming court contestants will be presented and King and Queen will be crowned during halftime at the game.
After the game, the campus hype continues Saturday in Byrnes Auditorium at 8 p.m. with a fraternity and sorority step show. The annual step show event typically sells out. Advance tickets are available for $7 or $15 at the door.
The Winthrop women’s basketball team rounds out the Homecoming weekend with the Eagles’ season opener against Troy University at 2 p.m. Sunday. It will be Winthrop’s first regular season game under the direction of new head coach Kevin Cook, who was an assistant coach for the Eagles last season.
Many Winthrop Homecoming events are free and are open to the public.
