York County families in need of help this Christmas only have a few days left to sign up for assistance.

Toys for Happiness – a program of the United Way and the S.C. Sleigh Bell Network – provides toys for children ages 14 years or younger whose families are eligible.

Interested families have through Saturday to register. Locations in York and Rock Hill are offering registration times.

Families are eligible if their income is at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Applicants must be legal guardians of the children who will receive the assistance.

Last year the program delivered Christmas toys to 3,400 children in need across York County, about 500 more than the previous year, said Debbie Hayworth, president of United Way of York County.

Agencies collecting toys countywide share names to ensure each family in need receives help only once. Only families registered to receive help will be eligible for toy assistance, Hayworth said.

“With the wonderful (community) support that we’ve had, we’ve never had to turn any family away” that completed the registration process, she said.

“We’re doing the best that we can with the resources that we get in to try to make this a merry Christmas for everyone in York County.”
