Northwestern’s McClure makes state basketball coaches’ Top 5 list

bbyers@heraldonline.comNovember 14, 2012

— Northwestern High School’s Rontavious McClure knows his future is wide open.

But he’s sure about the road he’ll take: basketball, not football.

McClure, a 6-foot-6 senior, is a standout wide receiver for the Northwestern Trojans football team, which travels to West Florence on Friday for a second-round playoff game. He has caught 69 passes for 861 yards and eight touchdowns.

On Wednesday, McClure was named one of the Top 5 senior basketball players in Columbia at a luncheon held by the South Carolina Basketball coach Association. He didn’t take it lightly.

“It was an honor I wasn’t expecting,” McClure said. “People think I’m all football but that’s not the sport I’ll play in college.

“Basketball is my sport and that’s what I’d rather play. I have some firm offers for basketball but none for football, but that’s not an issue.”

McClure has hoops offers from Appalachian State, Marshall and Charlotte.

And if decides to change his mind and play football, he has the opportunity to impress college coaches. McClure was chosen to play for South Carolina in the Shine Bowl All-Star Football Game on Dec. 15 in Spartanburg.

McClure was the lone local player to make the Top 5 lists. Thee was one for all four classifications, girls and boys.

Team-wise, defending Class A state champion Great Falls was picked in its usual No. 1 spot.

Region 3-AAAA was well represented by a pair of boys teams. Coach Mike Gossett’s Northwestern squad was chosen No. 5, with Eric Rollings’ Rock Hill Bearcats at No. 9.

Indian Land’s boys start the season at No. 8 in Class AA.
