ROCK HILL — One of three Rock Hill teenagers arrested for attacking and robbing a 51-year-old man Friday night asked the victim for a cigarette and to use his cell phone before he and the others began beating the man, eventually stealing his wallet and ID, according to police.
The three boys two aged 15 and one 16 were found at the YMCA on Charlotte Avenue late Friday.
The victim told police he was walking down Eden Terrace near Myrtle Drive close to 9 p.m. when three people wearing dark clothes started following him, a Rock Hill police report states.
One of the teens asked to use cell phone and for a cigarette, the report states. The man said no.
Thats when the teens, who had a BMX bicycle with them, jumped on him and began hitting him, according to the report. The man said he managed to throw one of the teens off him but not before they took his wallet and identification and took off running down Eden Terrace.
Officers found the teens at the YMCA, confirming their identities with the victim. Police found the mans wallet on the 700 block of Myrtle Drive, along with his personal papers on the 800 block of Evergreen Circle. Officials found the BMX bike on the 400 block of Myrtle Drive.
The teens, none of whom live in the area, were mobile on bikes, said Lt. Mike Belk with the Rock Hill Police Department.
The neighborhood, which borders Winthrop Coliseum and Winthrop Park, is relatively quiet. Residents can often be seen jogging or walking their pets early in the morning and late at night.
The robbery is definitely not a normal thing in that area, Belk said, adding that police dont see a whole lot of crime in that area.
The teens have been charged with strong-arm robbery, police documents show.
