Rock Hill man accused of shooting York man in the back

Published: December 5, 2012

— A Rock Hill man whose criminal record includes past armed robbery charges was arrested Tuesday after police identified him as the hooded gunman who shot a York man in the back last week.

Javan Labrese Peele, 20, of 1431 Ogden Road, is charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent crime, according to Rock Hill arrest records. He is held in the city jail on a $125,000 bond.

Timothy Stewart, 24, told authorities he was walking to a Fargo Street home in Rock Hill on Nov. 26 when he heard a rustle of leaves behind him, police documents show. He turned to find a man wearing a black hooded jacket walking toward him.

Stewart said he started to run when the man shot him. Despite testimony from a neighbor who said she never heard a gunshot, officers saw bullet holes in Stewart’s back. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center.

Two days later, police identified Peele as a suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest. They found him Tuesday afternoon.

State Law Enforcement Division records show Peele was convicted for possession of marijuana in June 2010. Six months later, he was arrested for armed robbery but was never convicted. Two months ago, he pleaded guilty to another possession of marijuana charge. He was sentenced to 29 days in jail.
