YORK — A York man on the receiving end of a police chief’s tackle after firing shots in a crowded neighborhood earlier this year will spend the next decade in jail, a judge decided Thursday.

Deelgin Robbins, 25, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and violently resisting arrest, said E.B. Springs, assistant 16th Circuit solicitor. Circuit Court Judge Lee Alford sentenced Robbins to 10 years in prison, with credit for the 276 days he has been in jail awaiting trial.

Shortly after noon on March 19, police arrested Robbins after he shot at two men in a blue truck on York’s California Street, which at the time was filled with retirees, residents and neighborhood children.

Police officers, some of whom were eating lunch at a nearby Subway restaurant, responded to the shots fired call and canvassed the area in search of the gunmen.

Robbins fled after police spotted him in a red pickup near a school. When he ran away, York Police Chief Andy Robinson and Lt. Gary Messer gave chase.

The two policemen fought with Robbins, whom Robinson eventually tackled to the ground. Once Robbins was in cuffs, officers found two loaded guns underneath him.

Robbins initially told police he was shooting at David Hayes, who Robbins claimed shot at him. Police arrested Hayes, who claimed he had nothing to do with the midday shootout.

Witnesses said they saw only one man leave the blue truck, but that man didn’t match Hayes’ description. The man in the truck, Jermichael Lynn, who was charged with illegal possession of a sawed-off shotgun, told police he didn’t know why Robbins would shoot at him while he was driving on California Street, Springs said.

Hayes was “arrested at Deelgin’s word,” Springs said, and hasn’t been prosecuted – meaning “someone else is out there terrorizing this neighborhood.”

Hayes was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, unlawfully carrying a weapon and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Charges against Hayes and Lynn are still pending, according to the state Judicial Department.
