YORK — Two female inmates at the York County Detention Center were served with additional drug warrants and then placed in lockdown after officials found them passing pills to each other last week.

Gwendolyn Denise Strikey, 40, of York, and Jona Lee Payne, 38, of Kannapolis, N.C., both now face chares for possession and distribution of prescription drugs, according to a York County Sheriff’s report.

Around 9 p.m. Thursday, a detention center officer completed a medications delivery to inmates in Housing Unit G, the report states. She told a sergeant that she thought she saw Strikey pass Vistaril, a sedative used to treat anxiety, to Payne.

Security video showed that Strikey took the medicine out of her mouth and passed it to Payne, who then put it in her mouth, the report states. Both inmates were taken to different housing units and placed on lockdown.

Strikey was booked at the detention center on Oct. 4 this year after she was arrested for possessing and dealing prescription drugs, according to the S.C. Judicial Department. She is held on a $10,000 bond.

Payne has been held at the prison since August after she was arrested on several drug-related charges, including possession and distribution of crack cocaine near a school, the detention center website shows. She is held on a $39,000 bond.
