Rock Hill man hides in attic to avoid police

Published: December 27, 2012

A Rock Hill man accused of stealing a $300 TV from the Wal-Mart in Tega Cay tried to hide from police in an attic early Thursday morning.

Rock Hill Police arrived at an apartment on Glenarden Drive just before 1 a.m. Thursday, looking for 21-year-old Dominick Lamont Stowers, according to a police report.

Police were given a tip earlier in the night that Stowers was wanted in Tega Cay for shoplifting and was staying in Rock Hill with his girlfriend, the report states.

When they arrived at the apartment, the report states, Stowers’ girlfriend tried to lie to officers about whether Stowers was home.

Carwunda Jackson, 21, gave officers permission to search her home and told them her boyfriend was there earlier but left when she fell asleep, the report states.

Officers found the door to the home’s attic “disturbed,” the report states, and climbed up to see if Stowers was hiding.

He was in his pajamas, according to the report, and police had probable cause to believe Jackson lied about knowing he was in her home.

Rock Hill police charged Jackson with hindering police, the report states.

Stowers was charged with first offense shoplifting, according to a Tega Cay police report.

Tega Cay police say Stowers walked out of Wal-Mart on Dec. 6 around 2 a.m. without paying for items in his cart, including a 32-inch LCD TV.

Officers watched surveillance video of Stowers and two other people with him leaving Wal-Mart without paying, then came back to the store about three hours later, the Tega Cay report states.
