High school basketball roundup: Great Falls boys edge Central

Jamarcus Culp made a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining to lift the Great Falls Red Devils to a 72-71 win over Central of Pageland in the opening round of the Farm Bureau Invitational in Chesterfield.

Central took a 71-70 lead with 18 ticks on the clock when Sam Caldwell made one of two free throws. The Red Devils then headed down the court and set up the last shot. Culp was fouled driving to the basket.

Great Falls looked like they were home free until Dennis Johnson made a 3-point goal on three straight trips down the floor. The last one tied the count at 70.

Great Falls improved to 4-4 with the win. They will take on the winner of the Dillon - Anson County game Friday night at 7 p.m.

Village Academy 58, Nation Ford 56

Village Academy came from behind in the second half and edged Nation Ford in the opening round of the Deltona Holiday Classic.

Nation Ford led 29-24 at intermission, but Village Academy outscored the Falcons 34-27 in the second half to claim the win. Carson Smith led Nation Ford with 19 points.

Clover 60, Crestwood 48

The Clover Blue Eagles used a 16-2 run to close the third quarter and defeated Crestwood in the opening round of the Comporium Christmas Tournament at Andrew Jackson.

Clover trailed by six at intermission, but when the third quarter was over they led 39-33. Alex Thompson led the Clover scoring attack with 20 points, while Jevon Blake added 10.

Clover has won three in a row and four of their last five games. They will take on the winner of the Andrew Jackson-Lewisville game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Irmo Yellow Jackets built up a 41-34 lead at halftime and went on to defeat Boiling Springs in the opening round of the Linberg Moody Invitational at Northwestern.

DeTrek Browning led the way for Irmo with 24 points. Justin McKie added 20 points for the Yellow Jackets. Jared Wallace led Boiling Springs with 23 points.

Concord 80, Carolina Forest 61

Defending champion Concord (North Carolina) moved into the winners bracket with a big win over Carolina Forest.

Concord led 17-9 after one period, but Carolina Forest fought back to within two at halftime. Concord had a seven-point lead after three periods, and they pulled away in the final period.

Connor Burchfield led the Concord attack with 29 points. Darren Black added 24 to the winning cause. Ryan Yurachek and Jawan Butler-Sevens led Carolina Forest with 11 points each.

North Cobb topped Rock Hill in the opening round of the Upward Bound tournament at Dorman in Spartanburg.

Nate Mobley Rock Hill with 20 points, while Jaylen Reid added 12.


Bank of York Invitational Tournament

Eight girls teams squared off and completed two rounds in the Bank of York Invitational Tournament on Thursday. When the two rounds were finished Irmo and Greenwood remained unbeaten, and they will play Friday at 2:30 p.m. for the championship.

In the opening round of play, South Pointe beat West Mecklenberg, while Greenwood topped Gaffney. In the other two games Broome defeated York, and Irmo won against Ashbrook.

In the second round of action York beat Ashbrook, while Gaffney defeated West Mecklenburg. The other second round games saw Irmo beat Broome and Greenwood topple South Pointe.

The schedule for Friday is as follows:

10 a.m. - West Mecklenburg vs. Ashbrook (7th place)

11:30 a.m. - Broome vs. South Pointe (3rd place)

1 p.m. - York vs. Gaffney (Consolation championship - 5th place)

2:30 p.m. - Irmo vs. Greenwood (Championship)
