The Northwestern Trojans used a 14-point run in the third quarter, in which they did not allow a shot from the field, to break open what was a three-point game at the half and defeat the Clover Blue Eagles 66-46 Tuesday night at Northwestern.
Clover senior Taylor Hoover had nine first-half points for the Blue Eagles, but the Trojans shut him down during the pivotal third-quarter burst.
“Taylor’s a great player and I’ll be glad when he graduates,” Northwestern coach Mike Gossett said. “I’m tired of seeing him.”
Trojans junior Mustafia Love had half of Northwestern’s 12 first-quarter points to help the hosts double up Clover in the quarter. Love also had half a dozen in the pivotal third frame, including two rim-rocking dunks. He had nine points in each half to evenly distribute his scoring for the night. Hoover finished with 14 to lead the Blue Eagles.
Crosstown foe Rock Hill will pay Northwestern a visit Friday night.
“They’re number one in the region and we can’t have the turnovers we did tonight or it will be a blowout,” Gossett said.
