We need to pay for the welfare state

Published: January 22, 2013

In the recent election, the American people emphatically supported the Obama welfare state; subsequent arguments and struggles in the Congress have further demonstrated that the majority of voters approve. President Obama’s inauguration speech clearly indicates that he will continue expanding government. Since we have ceased to be a republic and are now a democracy, the majority should rule.

To support this decision by the majority we must make whatever changes are needed to put our country on a sustainable path as a democratic welfare state. This means we must pay for the benefits we want.

We collect about $1 trillion per year in income taxes now but the yearly deficit is about $1.2 trillion, so we need to more than double current income taxes – otherwise we’re out of business as a country.

That’s the cost of the welfare state the citizens want.
