ROCK HILL — A Rock Hill man was airlifted to a Charlotte hospital after police say two men dressed all black knocked on his door and then fired into his chest before taking off with cash Tuesday night.
Police were called to 970 Eastwood Drive, off Willowbrook Avenue, in reference to a gunshot wound victim around 10:30 p.m., said Lt. Brad Redfearn with the Rock Hill Police Department.
They found Darryl Hemphill, 24, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
A woman said she was in her apartment with Hemphill and her two children when two men in ski masks came in, according to a Rock Hill police report. They confronted Hemphill and then shot him.
Hemphill managed to run from the house toward Princeton Road, where someone called EMS. Meanwhile, the gunman managed to take at least $300 from the house, even while the victim's girlfriend was still inside, Redfearn said.
The girlfriend and children were not injured, he said.
Hemphill was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center. His condition is currently unknown, but Redfearn said, "he was alert and talking to police when he was flown out."
A police dog found about $60 near the crime scene, the report states.
The intruders were not caught.
