FORT MILL — Looking for something new and interesting to do in fort Mill this weekend? Start at the Fort Mill History Museum.

At 2 p.m. Rufus "Rudy" Sanders, past chair of the museum, will guide a tour called "The Life & Times of Lucy Phifer and Daughter."

“Aunt” Lucy Phifer was born into slavery in 1844 and settled in Fort Mill after first sailing to Liberia, where she lost a husband and three children to tropical fever and another daughter lost a foot to infection. As a midwife, she helped with more than 100 Fort Mill births ad served domestic duties at the White Homestead before being buried in the Paradise area.

She was born in North Carolina about 43 miles north of Fort Mill. By age 40, she had traveled more than 9,000 miles before arriving in town to begin the second half of her life.
