Rock Hill qualified 9 for state individual wrestling championships

Herald CorrespondentFebruary 16, 2013

— Led by nine Rock Hill Bearcats, York County will be well represented next weekend in the individual State Wrestling Championship tournament at Anderson Civic Center.

The state tournament will be over two days starting Friday and finishing Saturday evening and will not only feature the 4A classification, but both the 3A and 2A-1A classification as well.

There will be 27 wrestlers from York County at the state tournament next weekend. A third of those come from Rock Hill High, who qualified nine of the 14 wrestlers they brought to the Upper State wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday at Laurens High School.

The top four from each of the 14 weight classes qualified for the state tournament. Fort Mill and York both qualified six wrestlers, while South Pointe qualified three, Clover qualified two and Nation Ford qualified one.

The Bearcats sent three to the tournament finals, but didn’t have any come away with the title.

However, head coach Cain Beard said he was glad to be sending as many as he was to the state tournament next week.

Beard said that a lot of his wrestlers felt like they needed to bounce back this weekend after losing the 4A state dual championship last weekend in Columbia to Lexington.

The team with the most local titles was Fort Mill, who had three wrestlers come away with Upper State titles.

South Pointe was next crowing two Upper State champions in Cameron Pike at 138-pounds and Corey Morgan at 182-pounds.

York also crowned an Upper State champion at 126-pounds in Robert Cunningham, who beat Fort Mill’s Jake Strong in the finals.

And the last of the local Upper State champions was Clover’s 220-pound wrestler Zach Conrad, who beat Nation Ford’s Josh Driscoll in the finals by pinning him in the third period. Driscoll was the only Falcons wrestler to qualify for the state tournament next week.

Both Northwestern and Lancaster’s seasons ended with none of their wrestlers qualifying for the state tournament. Lancaster brought five to the Upper State tournament. The majority of those Bruins who fell to qualify did so by losing in the consolation semi-finals. A win there, would have allowed them to move on to the state tournament.

“Overall it was a good team effort,” said Lancaster coach Leon Boulware. “Everybody came within winning a match of qualifying. We have to improve in certain areas. We have got to get stronger and comeback next year.”

Probably the most disappointed team was Northwestern, who brought nine wrestlers to the Upper State tournament, but came away with no state qualifiers.
