Fort Mill can’t handle the explosive growth

Published: February 20, 2013

Great news! There's a building boom in Fort Mill! So, those of you who already have a hard time getting out of your neighborhood in the morning or have to sit in traffic every evening trying to get home, the wait is about to get longer!

Oh, but they’re building the bypass to relieve traffic. Really? I don’t know how many of you have travelled outside this area, but I have never seen a two-lane bypass. In other words, it’s just another two lane road, one that takes all the big trucks by Fort Mill Grade School, Fort Mill Middle School, Nation Ford High School, Sugar Creek Elementary, Springfield Elementary, and Springfield Middle School.

Then there’s our school system, proposing another bond referendum for another school, expansion of the two high schools, turf for the two high school’s stadiums, etc., etc. Oh, and they say they don't want you to vote for these items separately because they may not get everything they want.

Are you kidding me? Shouldn't the voters have the right to decide what's needed as opposed to a want? Do the taxpayers need to be reminded that it wasn’t that long ago that a new middle school was built, Banks Trail, that sat empty for a year because they didn’t have the money to staff it?

Enough is enough. It's time for the town of Fort Mill, town of Tega Cay, York County, and Fort Mill school system to work together to control the growth. But I could only imagine how that would work. “Go ahead, guys. Keep issuing those building permits and we'll just keep burdening the taxpayers with more bond referendums.”
