CHARLESTON — A male seahorse gave birth to about 400 baby seahorses Wednesday at the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston.
The seahorse and his mate met about three weeks ago and became pregnant about a week later. Female seahorses deliver eggs to the male, who then fertilizes the eggs. The babies grow in his incubation pouch until their birth.
The young seahorses are now in one of the aquarium's back-up tanks.
