ROCK HILL — Police broke up an underage drinking party and a game of beer pong early Sunday, and then arrested the man they say had marijuana in his apartment and allowed several teenagers to drink beer and vodka.
A neighbor at Cowan Farms apartments, just off South Anderson Road, called police after midnight to complain about a loud party at the complex, according to a Rock Hill Police report. Police found several people inside, as well as marijuana in the bathroom, living room and on the dining room table.
Nine other people, with ages ranging from 16 to 20, were in the apartment as officers noticed a game of beer pong set up, found several empty beer cans and a nearly full bottle of vodka, and a marijuana-smoking device constructed from a water bottle on the front porch.
Police performed an alcohol detection test on James Briante Marquel McIlwain, 18, and Brian Alan Boyd, 19, who both tested positive for having consumed alcohol, the report states. They were both cited, but the machine malfunctioned before further tests could be performed.
Officers spoke with the man who rented the apartments, Demias Witherspoon, 19, who denied that any of the marijuana belonged to him, the report states. He also refused to tell police where the alcohol came from.
Police charged Witherspoon with possession of marijuana and transfer of beer to a person under 21. By Monday morning, he was still being held at the Rock Hill jail on a $1,000 bond.
McIlwain, Boyd and the other teens were allowed to leave, the report states. Police disposed of the alcohol and destroyed the pot-smoking device.
