Rock Hill’s 50th Come-See-Me festival kicked off this year with a nod to decades of fashion during its traditional parade down Oakland Avenue and through downtown.
As part of that throwback theme, organizers have brought are bringing back this year a staple from Come-See-Me’s past: Glencairn Garden hostesses.
During the first festival in 1962, a group of local high school girls acted as garden greeters, dressed in the finest attire.
In the early days, hostesses wore ball gowns and long gloves. In the late 1970s, the girls wore coordinating Palazzo pants and button-down shirts with scarves.
This year, hostesses have borrowed clothes from older family members’ closets as a tribute to one of Come-See-Me’s earliest traditions.
Hostesses participated in Thursday’s parade and will appear at Glencairn Garden throughout the festival.
Hostess Ashlyn Wright, a freshman at South Pointe High School, is borrowing a 1967 blue and white prom dress from her grandmother Rachel Yates Orr, who found the dress last year stored in an electric blanket bag in a chest of drawers.
Festival chairwoman Erika Bell is also borrowing an item from her grandmother, Ruby Whisonant.
For Thursday’s parade, Bell wore a light blue dress with lace sleeves that her grandmother sewed and wore to Erika’s parents’ wedding in 1966.
Weenie Daniels from the First Presbyterian Church senior adult group donated three dresses for this year’s garden hostesses to wear.
Other historical tributes during Come-See-Me include its 50th festival marker in its logo with Glen the Frog, designed by the late Vernon Grant, the nationally-acclaimed illustrator and Rock Hill resident.
This year’s logo also includes a Grant-designed owl, Come-See-Me’s first mascot in 1962.
