Winthrop board honors DiGiorgio with leadership forum, president emeritus title

April 12, 2013

— The Winthrop Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to honor outgoing President Anthony DiGiorgio on Friday with the creation of a DiGiorgio Forum on Leadership and the title of president emeritus and distinguished professor of public service and leadership.

The forum’s purpose will be to help students, faculty, staff and others become effective and ethical leaders by providing professional development workshops, one-on-one mentoring and other programs to enhance leadership skills. It will connect an array of leadership-related initiatives at Winthrop and connect more broadly with similar initiatives beyond the campus.

DiGiorgio is stepping down this summer as president after 24 years. Winthrop’s ninth president, DiGiorgio is one of the longest serving public university presidents in the country.

“I am touched by this gesture,” DiGiorgio said of the creation of the initiative bearing his name. “I have had a deep abiding interest in leadership for the past four decades. I look forward to giving life to this forum so it can be another anchor of sorts, similar to our West Forum.”

Board members also conferred on the president’s wife, Gale, the title of First Lady Emeritus.

“The Trustees of Winthrop University shall remain eternally grateful for the lasting transformative impact of Anthony J. and Gale N. DiGiorgio on Winthrop University,” the president emeritus resolution read. Staff reports
