HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK: All-Region 3 baseball, softball teams announced

The 2013 All-Region 3 baseball and softball teams were released Wednesday. Nation Ford’s Dalton Helms and Northwestern’s Dupree Hart were named Co-Players of the Year in baseball, while Clover’s Elizabeth Edmunds was the region’s top softball player. Helms is a junior pitcher and infielder, while Hart, a shortstop, and Edmunds, a pitcher, are both sophomores.

Northwestern coach Mitch Walters was named Coach of the Year after leading the Trojans to the region title and a berth in the district championship, and Clover’s Shea Hall is the softball Coach of the Year. She’s led the Blue Eagles to their first district championship and a berth in the Upper State championship, as well as the Region 3 title.

York Cougars wrestling fund-raiser: York Comprehensive High School’s wrestling program is raising money by selling pork shoulders. Eight-pound, whole shoulders and eight-pound, pulled shoulders each cost $25. The program asks that orders be placed by May 14 ahead of Saturday, May 18 when the pork can be picked up between 9 a.m. and noon.

Checks should be made out to “YCHS Wrestling” and money must be paid when the pork is ordered. For information or to order, contact wrestling coach Todd Hershberger via email at thershberger@york.k12.sc.us.

Great Falls finishes third in Class A golf state tourney: Great Falls finished third in the Class A golf state tournament held May 6 and 7 at the Pinecrest Golf Course in Bluffton. Christ Church won the tournament with a team score of 613. St. Joseph’s finished second with a 623, while Great Falls’ 664 was the best score among the non-parochial schools and good enough for a bronze place.

Christ Church’s Jackson Weede took individual medalist honors, carding a 148 over the two rounds. St. Joseph’s Bradley Kauffman (149) and Christian Baliker (150) finished one and two strokes back.

Great Falls’ top finisher was Josh Payseur in ninth place. He shot 153 over the two days, while teammates Brennon Lipscomb and Morgan Frost both shot 168. Austin Hinson and Jake Payseur also competed for the Red Devils in the tournament. In all, 106 golfers representing 19 Class A teams participated.
