ROEBUCK — A historic playoff march for the 12th ranked Nation Ford Falcons boys’ soccer team continues as they again grabbed a 1-0 win in the second round of the Class AAAA state playoffs over 15th ranked Dorman Cavaliers.
“I’ve got an amazing defense,” said Nation Ford head coach Elton Ramey. “We are finding ways to get it done.”
The Falcons were coming off a 1-0 win over Blythewood in the first round, their first playoff win in boys’ soccer and looked to continue that run against Dorman.
After battling to a scoreless first half, Dorman came out playing better in the second half and control the possession more to start.
With the increase in Dorman’s control, the Falcons stepped it up on defense.
Ramey pointed out the play of senior David Parks in leading the defense. Knowing he is going to get knocked around, Parks said it’s just a matter of how your approach things.
“It’s important to have the right mindset,” he said.
Nation Ford stepped up its offensive pressure in the second half and got some good looks at the goal.
About midway through the second half, the momentum swung fully Nation Ford’s way but the Falcons struggled to get the ball in the net.
Things finally came together for Nation Ford with about three minutes left as junior Jonathan Strilka served a crossing pass to sophomore Tyler Jarrett who snuck it into the net for the would be game-winner. It was Jarrett’s first goal of the season.
Senior captain Austin Huddy said the way the offense has been working has made the games tight.
“It’s very nerve-racking,” he said. “But our fitness has been a big factor in the game.”
The start of te match was delayed 21 minutes by severe weather in the area.
Nation Ford played a more aggressive game in the beginning. The Falcons controlled possessions but a stingy Dorman defense wouldn’t have any of it.
Dorman had a couple opportunities in the first half but the Falcons’ defense was able to hold its own and as the first half went own the Cavaliers started controlling the ball more and more.
Nation Ford had two close shots on goal with less than two minutes to go in the first half but one of them by sophomore Caleb Brukner bounced off the side of the goal and was snatched up by the Dorman keeper.
