— A teenage Carowinds employee was physically restrained Sunday after deputies say he took money from a park cash register, hid some of it in his sock and then became argumentative when police questioned him.

Deputies met with Carowinds security officers at about 5:30 p.m. after a security officer said he saw Michael Tyreek Brooks-Daniel, 17, of Fort Mill, take money from a customer and place the cash under the register with the receipt, according to a York County Sheriff’s report. Brooks-Daniel made two more transactions normally before asking for a supervisor to void the previous transaction.

He then put the money in his pocket and walked to the back of a kiosk, the report states. Security personnel confronted Brooks-Daniel, discovering he had $26.39 on him, with $16 hidden in his socks. Carowinds policy prohibits retail employees from carrying cash.

Deputies tried to question Brooks-Daniel in an interview room, but he became argumentative and tried to leave, the report states. Officers physically restrained him, during which he received a cut on his cheek and arm. He declined medical treatment.

Deputies arrested Brooks-Daniel, who refused to answer any questions and was “very uncooperative,” according to the report. Police took him to the Fort Mill Police Department to wait for transport to the detention center.

While at the police station, he said a customer gave him a $5 tip and he put the money under the register, the report states. He said he didn’t know what to do with it.
