ORANGEBURG — Mother Nature played ravage with the regular season schedules of Orangeburg Post 4 and Rock Hill Post 34, resulting in numerous postponements and cancelled finales for both teams.
On Thursday, the trend continued into their first round American Legion playoff matchup. Torrential rainfall and thunderstorms just minutes after the playing of the national anthem resulted in Game Four being called off at Mirmow Field.
Weather and field conditions permitting, the two teams will look to make up Game Four at 7 p.m. on Friday. Given the lack of drainage at the historic 65-year-old ballpark, the game could be moved again to Saturday morning at a time to be determined, according to Post 4 coach Frank Leysath.
“It’s the Lord’s work,” said Leysath about the rainfall. “it’s not up to me to say. We just wait to play and see what happens.”
The persistent wet weather has not only proven in Leysath’s words “frustrating” and “agonizing” for his team. The series between Greenwood and Gaffney, with the winner set to face either Post 4 or Post 34, has yet to complete Game One.
Gaffney finally claimed game one 5-2, but Greenville took game two 7-0 to tie the series. Game three is slated for Friday in Greenville.
