Former Trojan Martinez named preseason second team All-American

Former Northwestern soccer star Alex Martinez was named preseason second team All-American on Tuesday by College Soccer News. Martinez, a rising senior at N.C. State, started all 20 games and scored 11 goals last season for the Wolfpack, while assisting 10 more. His 32 total points was second best in the conference, and he was third best in goals and second in assists en route to a first team All-ACC spot.

During his time at Northwestern, Martinez helped the Trojans to three Class AAAA state titles, including the 2009 ESPN Rise National Championship, while earning prep All-American honors twice. He signed with High Point University and suited up for the Panthers two years, scoring 11 goals his sophomore year before transferring to N.C. State.

Martinez was joined on the second team by strikers Robbie Kristo (Saint Louis), Mark Sherrod (Memphis), Schillo Tshuma (Maryland), midfielders Pedro Ribeiro (Coastal Carolina), Aaron Kovar (Stanford), and defenders Eric Miller (Creighton), Bryan Gallego (Akron), Axel Sjoberg (Marquette), Tim Parker (St. John's) and goalie Rafael Diaz (St. John's).

The first team consisted of the ACC's leading scorer, Maryland forward Patrick Mullins, Reinaldo Brenes (Akron), Mamadou Diouf (Connecticut), midfielders Steve Neumann (Georgetown), Ema Boateng (UC Santa Barbara and Jared Watts (Wake Forest), defenders Boyd Okwuonu (UNC), Kyle Venter (New Mexico), Nicholas Hagglund (Xavier), Sebastian Ibeaga (Duke), and goalie Andre Blake (Connecticut).

Winthrop women release 2013 schedule

The Winthrop women's soccer team will play an 18-game regular season schedule plus two exhibition contests in 2013.

The Eagles are coming off a 12-7-2 campaign in 2012 which saw the team reach the Big South Tournament final for the second time in the program's history. 10 of their matches this fall will be played at Eagle Field.

“We have put together a challenging non-conference schedule this year,” head coach Spencer Smith said. “We will be well prepared for the conference slate as we work towards a conference title and NCAA berth.”

Smith’s squad will face Wofford, Anderson, South Carolina State, Alabama A&M, Davidson and The Citadel in non-conference action. The conference schedule opens Sept. 25 on the road at Gardner-Webb. Winthrop will host five conference matches starting with Longwood on Sept. 28.

October has Winthrop playing host to UNC Asheville on Oct. 9, Campbell (Oct. 19), Liberty (Oct. 23) and Presbyterian (Oct. 29). The Eagles will play conference road games at High Point (Oct. 2), VMI (Oct. 5), Coastal Carolina (Oct. 11) and Charleston Southern (Oct. 16). Winthrop will head to Radford on October 26 in a rematch of the 2012 Big South Championship match.

The Big South Tournament will take the top eight teams in the standings with the top four seeds hosting first-round contests on November 2. The semi-finals will be Nov. 8 and the championship on Nov. 10 with both rounds being hosted by Coastal Carolina.
