Winthrop volleyball picked to finish seventh in Big South

July 30, 2013

The Winthrop volleyball team has been predicted to finish seventh in the upcoming Big South season.

The seventh-place prediction based on voting by the league’s coaches is the lowest a Winthrop volleyball team has been predicted since 1995 when the Eagles were predicted to finish last out of eight teams.

The Eagles finished last season with a 14-16 overall record and an 8-6 mark in the Big South and fell to Presbyterian in the first round of the conference tournament.

First-year head coach Bruce Atkinson has only one player returning from last season, sophomore Rachel Lenz, and will feature 14 newcomers.

Winthrop will open its season Aug. 30-31 when it hosts the Winthrop Classic featuring Tennessee Tech, Fordham and Savannah State.

Liberty was predicted to finish first, garnering eight first-place votes with Costal Carolina predicted to finish second. Liberty’s Carolina Douglas was voted as the Preseason Player of the Year.
