Crickets and cicadas might be the only onlookers when the Chester and Clover high school football teams take the practice field early Friday morning. The two schools are getting the earliest jump on the season in this area, but will be joined eventually throughout Friday by the other 12 local teams, including Westminster Catawba Christian, which started Monday as part of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association.

Indian Land will also hold an overnight practice, but the Warriors will start Friday and run through early Saturday morning. All teams will practice in shorts and helmets until Aug. 7 when they can throw on full pads. On Aug. 9 all fall sports teams are allowed to scrimmage. Week Zero, and the first wins and losses of the 2013 season, arrives Aug. 23. Let the countdown begin.
