YORK — The York Cougars and Chester Cyclones are two perennial contenders dealing with inexperience.
York handled that better in a 19-7 win against Chester in Week Zero action Friday. Not that Cougars coach Bobby Carroll would know it.
You come in at halftime and see a bunch of long faces and were winning, Carroll said. Thats inexperience. We have a lot of 4A players who dont have that experience.
Were just happy to get a win against Chester.
The Cyclones opened the second quarter with a costly mistake.
Quarterback Tommy Sanders 85-yard run was called back because of a holding penalty. York partially blocked the ensuing punt the second blocked punt of the half to set up a third red-zone trip.
The Cougars answered with five straight runs. Jerome Pettiways 1-yard touchdown run on a fourth-down sneak opened the scoring.
Special teams were huge tonight, Carroll said. It gave us great ball placement several times.
York (1-0) regained possession after an interception by Patch Edwards, and Carroll decided to gamble on fourth down again. Pettiway made good with a 16-yard touchdown strike to Daurice Simpson, who made the catch despite taking a shot in the back. The kick failed, but the Cougars led 13-0.
Chester ditched the spread for a power formation in response, and that resulted in a 13-play drive and a 9-yard touchdown run by Lorenzo White a score that held until halftime.
Sanders didnt play for most of the second half because of a leg injury, but Quan Caldwell led a drive to the York 25 to start the third quarter. Another costly mistake, however, doomed the Cyclones.
Yorks Ethan Whitesides recovered a fumble after a bad snap, and Chester didnt get another chance to take the lead.
You have to do things right the first time, Chester coach Anthony Sterling said. Thats what we try to teach our kids. We gave it to them, and gave it to them, and (York capitalized). I dont blame them.
A 35-yard punt return by Simpson set up a 1-yard scoring run by Ryan Moore to give York a 19-7 lead with 1:49 left in the third quarter. Moore, who finished with 28 carries for 128 yards, helped the Cougars put the game away in the fourth quarter.
