South Pointe Stallions sustain pace in win over Blythewood

Herald correspondentAugust 31, 2013

The fans might have liked it when South Pointe and Blythewood combined for 40 points in the first quarter of Friday’s Week 1 contest, but Stallions coach Strait Herron wasn’t among those enjoying the fun.

Fortunately, South Pointe straightened out and held the Bengals scoreless in the second half en route to a 47-24 win.

“I don’t know if we came out so pumped up in the first half that we lost our adrenaline,” Herron said. “But our front really exploded in the second half.”

The teams combined for 555 total yards in the first half, which started with that wacky first quarter.

Blythewood’s Javon Smith threw a 42-yard strike for a touchdown to Lynard Jamison on the first play from scrimmage. Smith later threw a 28-yard touchdown to Deyon Grayer on the last play of the quarter.

“That’s a really good Blythewood team,” Herron said. “We knew we were going to have a challenge.

South Pointe, meanwhile, took advantage of three highlight-reel touchdowns. Marveon Mobley jumped an out route for an 82-yard interception return for a score. Trae’von Hinton added a second “pick-six” on Smith’s next pass.

Tay Blake topped it off with a 90-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Johnson. South Pointe led 23-17 after one quarter, one in which Smith and Blake combined for 320 passing yards.

“I saw the safety cheat over the middle and went and got the ball,” Johnson said of the long-distance touchdown.

Kyle Dix added his second field goal at the 9:07 mark, but Blythewood’s Anthony Peak returned the ensuing kick 85 yards for a score. Bengals linebacker Darrin Ransome added a goal-line interception, and South Pointe held a 26-24 lead at halftime.

The Stallions dominated the second half. Zeek Rodney’s sack in the third quarter provided solid field possession, and Blake made good with a 14-yard touchdown run on a keeper for a 33-24 lead.
