Big plays carry Forestview past Clover

Herald correspondentAugust 31, 2013

— The scoreboard did not show it, but the Clover Blue Eagles showed marked improvement from Week Zero in a 41-6 loss to the Forestview Jaguars on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

The Blue Eagles’ defense gave up the big play and struggled offensively converting on third and fourth downs.

Clover had five fourth downs with less than two yards to convert, but failed to pick up the first down on each occasion.

Forestview had five plays of at least 28 yards, accounting for 243 of its 319 total yards, but Clover’s defense played well otherwise.

Clover dominated the first quarter, keeping the ball for all but four plays. Clover came up short on a fourth and goal from the 1 yard line.

Forestview lit up the scoreboard three plays later on a 78-yard scamper by Bishop Ford. It was one of four big plays for the Jaguars in the second quarter.

The rush was just the second first down for the Jaguars, compared with five for Clover in the first quarter, but the touchdown set off a 27-0 run for Forestview in the second quarter as the bottom fell out for the Blue Eagles.

The Jaguars added a 24-yard interception return by Marcus McCluney and scored on drives of fewer than three plays twice more in the half. The rushing statistics were close to even at intermission, but the Jaguars had 79 passing yards to none for Clover. Clover finally got on the board in the third quarter when Tanner Whitley scored from three yards out.

Chase Gallant had a productive night for the Blue Eagles as he rushed for 93 yards on 14 carries.

Clover hits the road for the first time this season next Friday as the Blue Eagles travel to Spring Valley.
