Rock Hill officers were called to Piedmont Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon in response to a 13-year-old girl who was in labor, according to a police report.

The age of consent in South Carolina is 16 years old.

A nurse found that the girl was only 13 and the father of the baby was “believed to be” 17, the report states. The girl did not know where the baby’s father was, but said he stays in the Boyd Hill area of Rock Hill.

The girl’s mother told police she did not know her daughter was pregnant before she went into labor.

Executive Officer Mark Bollinger, spokesman for the Rock Hill Police Department, said cases like this, in which a mother is so young, are rare in this area. Police will continue their investigation soon, he said.

“We’ll wait until the 13-year-old is squared away physically from the birth, Bollinger said, “and then the detectives will interview her and figure out where we go from here.”

On Thursday morning, Bollinger did not know the status of the girl or the baby.
