FORT MILL — Fire officials are investigating a house fire in Fort Mill that claimed the life of one person Thursday night.
York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said she could not release the name of the victim because the family has not been notified.
Theres no reason to believe the death or the fire was suspicious but the York County Fire Marshals office is handling the case, said Maj. Bryan Zachary of the Fort Mill Police Department.
Authorities arrived at the scene of the fire at 106 Gilmore Street around 10 p.m. The home belongs to Lola Neely, according to York County GIS, but neighbor Johnny Gainey said that a relative of Neely was living in the home.
Gainey said he and his girlfriend walked around the corner from their home to Gilmore Street and watched firemen battle the blaze until after midnight.
The man who lives in the home did not have running water or electricity but typically slept with a candle beside his bed, Gainey said. On Friday morning, a charred mattress lay on the grass beside the home.
He stayed to himself, but he was good people, Gainey said. We would see him walking to Hardees and back, and sometimes he would stop and talk to me.
The older wood-frame house had significant damage, Zachary said.
