Miller, Vikings run past Blue Eagles

Herald correspondentSeptember 6, 2013

— Key’Shawn Pressley displayed blazing speed to return a kickoff 89 yards into the end zone, giving the visiting Clover fans reason to cheer Friday.

However, that was the only roar from the visiting section at Harry Perrone Stadium as Spring Valley coasted to a 49-14 victory.

The Vikings (3-0) produced touchdowns on their first four possessions to claim a 27-0 lead early in the second quarter, setting the tone for the lopsided margin of victory.

Vikings running back John Miller ran for 126 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half, and quarterback Chris Adams added 87 yards and a score as Spring Valley did all of its offensive damage on the ground.

Clover, however, maintained its offensive strategy with a power running game throughout the contest, despite facing a hefty deficit throughout.

With the game out of hand, first-year Clover coach Chad Smith said the decision to keep the ball on the ground was important to continue to rebuild the Blue Eagles’ program.

“That is what we do,” said Smith in reference to the rushing offense. “Whether good or bad, we will always do that. Tonight, we faced adversity with six running backs out. However, we still competed.”

Smith said that the strategy to keep the ball on the ground paid off with a lengthy drive in the third quarter and an eventual touchdown late in the contest.

“In the third quarter, they still had their starters in on defense and we moved the ball,” said Smith. “What we want to do each week is to get better; that is important in trying to build this program.

“We will watch the film this week and see where we improved.”

Clover (0-3) got 60 yards from running back Coby Hamblen and also a rushing touchdown from Pendergrass.
