— A pedestrian was killed Saturday night after being hit by a pickup truck while trying to cross U.S. 21 in Rock Hill, according to York County Coroner Sabrina Gast and Rock Hill police.

Kevin Hairston, 27, of Charlotte died in the crash, which occurred around 10:30 p.m. near Anderson Road, said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.

Rock Hill police say a 1997 Dodge Ram towing a trailer was traveling south in the 1400 block of East Main Street, or U.S. 21, when Hairston entered the roadway into the path of the pickup truck. The truck hit the pedestrian. The victim was taken to Piedmont Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation determined Hairston did not yield the right of way to the truck. He was not in a crosswalk and was in a dark stretch of the roadway when he stepped into the road.

The collision is being investigated by the Rock Hill Police Department S.T.A.R. Team.
