WINNSBORO — Fairfield Central’s football team, ranked second in the state’s Class AA poll, delivered an early knockout blow which Chester was never able to recover from in a 50-26 romp Friday night.
The Griffins exploded with 22 first-quarter points and added 21 more for an overwhelming 43-10 lead at the half.
Playing without injured tailback Lorenzo White, the Cyclones generated their first first down midway through the second quarter and were unable to establish a consistent flow.
Chester coach Anthony Sterling attributed the lackluster performance to poor focus.
“Mentally, we are not prepared. I don’t know if it is the fact that we expect our success from last year to automatically carry over,” Sterling said. “But clearly, we have to get better.”
Sterling said that his team needs to regroup, with continued work on both sides of the ball. That, he said, must happen if the Cyclones are to successfully defend last year’s region championship.
“The only thing we must do is to get continued reps,” he said.
Facing the 33-point halftime deficit, Chester did show several bright spots with 16 points in the second half.
Quarterback Tommie Sanders completed three passes for 158 yards with scoring strikes of 53 and 65 yards.
Quan Caldwell, who got the start under center, passed for 60 yards with a 57-yard score.
