Winthrop volleyball rallies in final set, beats San Jose State

— The Winthrop volleyball team survived a furious comeback by the San Jose State Spartans Friday, taking a 3-2 victory in the first game of the Bankers Classic hosted by the University of the Pacific.

Winthrop improved to 7-1 overall while San Jose State fell to 2-6.

Senior Irene Ojukwu led the Eagles with 16 kills. Freshman Hjordis Eiriksdottir had 14 kills and a team-high .355 hitting percentage. Freshman Alina Sopihzuk had 12 kills and 16 digs. Freshman Maria Volstad led the team with 19 digs and junior Jessie Vicic led the team with 52 assists.

Winthrop won the first set and second sets with 25-23 scores. San Jose State won the third and fourth sets, 25-19 and 25-16, setting up the final set. After a 7-7 tie in the final set the Eagles went on an 8-4 run to take the final set 15-11 and win the match.

The Eagles played Saturday, facing Pacific and Cal-Riverside.
