Winthrop men, women runners fourth at UNC-Asheville run

— The Winthrop men’s and women’s cross country teams claimed fourth place finishes out of 11 teams Saturday at the UNC Asheville Cross Country Carnival.

Sophomore Colby Coulter led the Eagle men with a top 10 finish, placing eighth in the 6K race at 19:26. Senior Lisa Nichols was the top finisher for the Eagle women att 14th in the 5K distance at 19:31.

Western Carolina's Travis Alfaro won the men's individual title with a time of 18:54 while Wofford's Samantha Hughes won the women's race with a time of 18:21.

Winthrop's other male runners were: Blake White, 24th, 20:18; Ellis Coe, 27th, 20:25; Braxton Sheriff, 32nd, 20:34; Allen Ownley, 45th.21:26; Mathew Egbert, 46th, 21:29; Eric Hammett, 50th, 21:45.

Winthrop’s women’s runners were: Shayna Jenkins, 16th, 19:34; Sarah Devaux, 17th, 19:47; Jessica Whitmire, 20th, 19:54; Jaclyn Baker, 36th, 20:04; Alexis Miller, 38th, 21:11.

“We had excellent team running without our top two ladies and top four guys,” said Winthrop head coach Ben Paxton. “Put them in the mix and we could have challenged for the team title. Next week we will run everyone and we will see how the teams do with a full squad competing.”

UNC Asheville won both races. Winthrop will be in action next Saturday when the Eagles host the annual Adidas Winthrop Invitational at the Winthrop Lake course.
