Buford topples Lewisville Lions

Herald correspondentSeptember 20, 2013

Five different Buford players combined for touchdowns to breakdown Lewisville’s football team and hand the Lions a 34-22 loss Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets (2-2) came to the Lions’ Den as popular underdogs after a loss to Charlotte Country Day last week. Bloodied but unbowed, Buford took Lewisville (3-2) to the sword from the opening possessions, as LaDarius Parker’s 17-yard rush established a lead the visitors rarely gave up.

The Lions’ junior running back Dre Bailey (15-44 yards, 3 touchdowns) made clutch plays when it counted to keep the home team in the game, including a 19 yard scoring grab in the first quarter to complement two rushing touchdowns in both halves.

Sophomore quarterback Scotti Moser (4-4, 80 yards, 1 touchdown) had few opportunities to throw the ball in a run-heavy system, but when he did, he made them count. His short gain to wide receiver Kyle Norcia put the Yellow Jackets on top by six in the second quarter before Nic Chavis (16-54 yards, 1 touchdown) punched in his own score to open up a 13-point deficit.

The night only got worse for the Lions when junior quarterback Cody Montgomery (19-33, 183 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception) threw a pick with 1:46 left on the clock, which Buford’s Troy Cunningham gladly ran back for six.

Lewisville returns to the road for the first time since August next week at Eau Claire. Meanwhile, Buford takes on Great Falls at home. The Yellow Jackets have won only 12 of the 42 times the two teams have met on the gridiron.
