South Pointe Stallions trample Fort Mill Yellow Jackets

Herald correspondentSeptember 28, 2013

The South Pointe Stallions stampeded their way over visiting Fort Mill for a 52-14 win to open Region III-AAAA play.

The win helped the Stallions bounce back from their only loss of the year two weeks ago against Spartanburg.

“I am happy we played well after last week in the Spartanburg game,” said Stallions coach Strait Herron. “This week we did well at practice and the kids executed well.”

Herron said he has already started thinking about Northwestern looking to next week’s game.

“We know what it’s going to be like,” he said.

South Pointe was led by senior Josh Brice on the ground as he rushed for 113 yards on six carries and two touchdowns. Through the air, senior quarterback Tay Blake passed for 137 yards and senior Kyle Brandt caught three passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.

South Pointe opened the second half keeping the ball on the ground as Blake ran in from 17 yards out to score, but the big run of the drive came from sophomore Vinny Emanuele, who had a 28-yard run to get the Stallions into scoring position.

The Stallions added a 30-yard field goal from kicker Kyle Dix with less than a minute left in the third quarter to continue to control the pace against the Jackets.

In the fourth, Fort Mill backup quarterback Taylor Hemphill led the Jackets on their second scoring drive of the game, going 74 yards in 9:05 on 15 plays as Hemphill hit senior Deryan Sanders for a 23-yard touchdown to make it 45-13.

South Pointe had 309 total yards in the first half. Fort Mill had 83.

“We got to cover everything,” said Fort Mill coach Ed Susi. “Especially against those guys. You have got to make great tackles and we couldn’t tackle anyone tonight.”

On the Stallions’ first drive of the second quarter, they picked up yards in a hurry, going 70 yards in 69 seconds with a big grab from Brandt, who snagged a 31-yard pass to get South Pointe onto the Fort Mill side of the field.

Then big runs from Emanuele put South Pointe into the red zone before Blake scrambled in from 16 yards out.

Fort Mill had poor drives, giving South Pointe good starting position midway through the second quarter. The Stallions continued to push the pace as they scored again on two plays – this time Blake hitting Brandt for a 50-yard score to put South Pointe up 28-7.

With about 74 seconds left in the first, Brice found a hole in the Jackets’ defense, as he ran in from 25 yards out to extend the Stallions lead.

South Pointe came out using a no-huddle offense to open the game and did a good job keeping Fort Mill guessing what it would do as Brice racked up 23 yards on four carries to lead the Stallions’ 10-play drive.

The Stallions took a time out and then came out as Blake scrambled and hit senior Anthony Johnson for a 25-yard touchdown pass on the next play after the time out to put South Pointe on the board.

Fort Mill pounded the ball on the ground on its first drive but pulled a short, sneaky pass on occasion to surprise South Pointe. That kept the ball moving as Sanders and junior Malik Long kept the ball on the ground for the Jackets.

Facing a fourth-and-six, Fort Mill starting quarterback Rogan Wells hit junior Brandon Plyler for a 21-yard pick up and first down to get the Jackets into the red zone. Wells then hit Sanders for another first down several plays later to get Fort Mill to the five-yard line of the Stallions, where Long took it in two plays later with just 13 seconds left in the first quarter. The drive was a 14-play, 78-yard trot for the Jackets.

With all that work to keep Fort Mill in the game in the first quarter, South Pointe had none of it as Brice hustled for a 65-yard TD on the first play of the Stallions second drive.
