The Fort Mill girls and boys led the way in the Region 3-AAAA swim meet at the Rock Hill Aquatics Center on Saturday as the top three finishers earned All-Region honors and qualified for the state meet next Saturday in Columbia.

Both the Fort Mill teams had already claimed region titles by virtue of the head-to-head competition during the regular season, and their superiority in the region was shown again on Saturday.

The Lady Yellow Jackets had all three of their relay teams win on Saturday. In addition they won five of the individual events.

The Yellow Jacket boys won two of the three relay events and finished second in the third one. They also won two of the individual events.

The Fort Mill girls finished second last year in the state meet, while the boys were sixth. Fort Mill head coach Cindy Van Buskirk thinks both of her teams can do better.

“I believe our girls have a fighting chance next week to win the state championship,” said Van Buskirk. “It will be a dog fight, and I think four teams will be in the running for the title. Those four scores will be very close.”

Buskirk is also encouraged by her boys team’s chances to do well next Saturday.

“I believe that our boys can be in the top four,” Buskirk said. “They did well last year, but I think they can improve next Saturday.”

The coach said she was satisfied with her teams’ performances Saturday. She was especially pleased with the relay events in both divisions.

The Lady Yellow Jackets have won the region title for six consecutive years. The Yellow Jacket boys won this year for the fifth straight time.

There were six double winners in the individual events on Saturday. Three were in the girls division, and three in the boys.

Fort Mill’s Madison Coughlin won in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Teammate Meg Wiggins claimed the top finish in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke. Clover’s Morgan Rulevich had the best time in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

Northwestern’s Riley League was the top performer in the 200 individual medley and tied for the top spot in the 100 breaststroke. Fort Mill’s Zach Piedt was the best in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Nation Ford’s Brandon Sweezer claimed first place in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle.
