Former Bearcat Coulson signs with Winthrop soccer

Winthrop UniversityOctober 3, 2013

Winthrop men’s soccer coach Rich Posipanko announced Wednesday afternoon the signing of Charles Coulson to a national letter of intent to play for the Eagles next season.

Coulson is a local standout who attended Rock Hill and played for the South Carolina United Battery Academy. At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he gives the Eagles good size at the striker position. He will join the Eagles in January 2014 after graduating this past spring and taking off the fall semester.

“Charles did a smart thing and took a year off after graduating high school and was able to continue playing for S.C. United Battery Academy because of his age,” said Posipanko. “He is a hard worker with a very good work ethic. He is very intelligent and also has good leadership qualities.”

Coulson captained the 2013 Rock Hill varsity team, tallying 25 goals and seven assists on the season. He was a first team all-area and all-region selection as well as being selected to represent South Carolina at the Clash of the Carolinas. He’s also played for the South Carolina ODP team, Discoveries Soccer Club and Charlotte Soccer Academy.

By entering Winthrop in the spring, Coulson – who is the first signee for 2014 – will have an entire semester to adapt to the college game.
