Regarding Don Worthington’s Monday column “S.C. initiative focuses on frequent ER users,” he neglects to mention the amount of money devoted to studying ER users in South Carolina. He also fails to note that none of the money we are shelling out will go to medical care for the people studied. Instead, it will connect the ER users with agencies 99 percent of them have already connected with!
We will pay for this with our South Carolina taxes. We will also pay for these ER users primary care in the ER with our increased premiums if we are lucky enough to be qualified for health insurance. And we will pay for Medicaid expansion – which could have yielded quality care outside the emergency room for the folks below 100 percent poverty. The problem is we will be paying for this Medicaid expansion care in other states: South Carolina has turned the benefits down!
Please contact your legislators and ask them to pass a Medicaid expansion bill in 2014. We can truly care for our brothers and sisters by prayers and phone calls and letters to the politicians responsible for this nonsense called “Healthy Outcome Plans.”
