Great Falls loses to River Bluff

Herald correspondentOctober 12, 2013

— It was a milestone night for the River Bluff Gators, a new program that is playing its first year of competitive football.

First, the school crowned its first homecoming king and queen during halftime. But more importantly, the Gators picked up their first ever victory with a 41-21 victory over Great Falls on Friday night.

The Gators dominated with old fashioned football by simply lining up and running it at the Red Devils’ defense. River Bluff, with a new facility and campus located in Lexington, rolled up 436 yards on the ground. Brandon Tillman led the surge with 171 yards while Tiawan Glenn and Devon Johnson contributed 93 and 82 yards respectively. All three accounted for two touchdowns each.

“We are unable to do anything fancy,” Gators coach David Bennett said with a grin. “The old saying is that you are never as good as you seem and not as bad as you seem. In other words, we have a long ways to go.”

However, Bennett, the former coach at Coastal Carolina, had nothing but words of praise for the Great Falls program.

“They have loads of athletes,” he said. “If that crowd had more kids (depth) and less guys who go both ways, it would have been a different story.”

Great Falls coach Ken Schofield acknowledged that his team was dominated in the trenches, but said that depth did play a factor.

“We did not have enough horses, but still, we did not make the plays,” Schofield said. “We did not do the right things and our leadership fell off a bit.”

Red Devils quarterback Chris Culp provided highlights with 188 yards passing and two scores.
