— The South Pointe Stallions won the Region 3-AAAA girls golf tournament for the fourth straight year Monday at the Lancaster Golf Club.

The Stallions were led by Chandler Case, who earned medalist honors for the tournament with a blistering 4-under 69. The Stallions senior had a 35 on the front nine and a 34 on the back.

“I hit it today as good as I ever have,” Case said. “This was the first time I ever played a round that was bogey-free. I was pleased with the way I played today, and I am excited about our team moving to the next round.”

South Pointe set a school record of 307, which topped the old mark of 319 that was set earlier in the year. Lancaster finished second at 331, while York was third with 390, and Fort Mill came home fourth with a 393. Those four schools will advance to the Upper State tournament Monday at Three Pines Golf Club, with Dorman High School serving as the host team.

“Our girls really played well today,” South Pointe coach Kimberly Case, Chandler’s mother, said. “We set our goals at the beginning of the year, and this was one of them. We have had a strong work ethic all year. I have seen quite a bit of improvement in every player.”

Case led the All-Region 3-AAAA team, which included teammates Jodee Tindal, Jaelyn Tindal and Whitney Carter. Emily Cox, Baylee Evans and Carly Funderburk of Lancaster also earned all-region honors.

York’s Sarah Smith and Northwestern’s Kelsey Becknell also made the team.

In addition to the top four teams earning trips to next week’s Upper State tournament, Smith and Becknell qualified as individuals for the event.

Lancaster’s second-place finish marked a big improvement from last year, when the Bruins did not qualify for the next round.

“Our young team has really worked hard this year,” said first-year coach Kim Perry. “Finishing second today huge for us. We have really shown a lot of improvement as the year as gone along.”

Mark Strickland, Lancaster High’s athletics director, served as chairman of the region tournament and was pleased with the day despite a few early showers.

“We have some veteran coaches, who know what is going on, and that makes it easy,” Strickland said. “Phil Small and his crew had the course in great shape. They really gave us the red carpet treatment today.”
