Volleyball returns home after six-game road stretch

The Winthrop volleyball team returns to the court this weekend looking to gain momentum in the conference as the Eagles end a six-match road swing with matches at High Point and Campbell.

The Eagles enter the weekend with an 11-8 overall record and 2-3 mark in the Big South. Winthrop is coming off a 3-0 sweep of the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs last Saturday after falling in four sets to UNC Asheville Friday.

Alina Sopizhuk and Irene Ojukwu continue to battle for the team lead in kills as they’ve recorded 231 and 229 respectively. Rachel Lenz is not far behind with 200 kills this season. Lenz is currently hitting .322 on the season which ranks her third in the conference. Jessie Vicic’s 11.73 assists per set continues to lead the conference and ranks her ninth overall in Division I.

Winthrop will take on the High Point Panthers Friday evening at 7 p.m. inside the Millis Center. High Point is 9-11 on the season and 3-2 in the Big South. The Panthers split their two matches last weekend at home, falling to Radford in five sets before defeating Liberty 3-0.

Winthrop defeated the Panthers last season inside the Winthrop Coliseum in a five-set thriller after the Eagles dropped the first two sets. High Point last defeated Winthrop in 2010.

Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. the Eagles will take on the Campbell Camels in Buises Creek, NC. Campbell is 11-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference and is on a three-match losing streak. The Camels fell at home to Liberty and Radford last weekend with the squad’s last victory coming at Charleston Southern on October 4.

Winthrop leads the overall series with the Camels 13-6 and has defeated Campbell each of the last two years.

The Eagles will return to the Winthrop Coliseum for the first time since September 28 when they host Radford at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 25.
