The first of 14 scheduled Winthrop Basketball Coaches Shows featuring mens coach Pat Kelsey and womens coach Kevin Cook will be held Monday, Nov. 4, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings, located at 1460 Meeting Boulevard just off Dave Lyle Boulevard in Rock Hill.
Except for three occasions (Nov. 18, Dec. 2 and Dec. 30) when a show will not be held, the coaches will talk Winthrop basketball with co-hosts Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco, and take questions from fans via social media. Eagle fans are encouraged to visit Buffalo Wild Wings (803-328-WING) on Monday nights throughout the season. The hour-long show will air on Stretch Internet via the Winthrop Athletic website. Coach Cook will be featured during the first 30 minutes of the program, followed by Coach Kelsey in the final half of the show. They will take a look at upcoming games, preview past contests and look at whats going on around the Big South Conference.
Both Winthrop teams will tip-off the season during Homecoming weekend, Nov. 9-10. Kelseys squad will host Roanoke College at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the nightcap of a volleyball/basketball doubleheader while Cooks crew will battle College of Charleston on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Winthrop volleyball team will meet UNC Asheville at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Tickets for the 2013-14 basketball home games are now on sale at the Winthrop box office, located on the lower level of the Winthrop Coliseum, or by calling the ticket office at 803-323-2345.
The 14 dates for the coaches show are: Nov. 4, 11, 25; Dec. 9, 16, 23; Jan. 6, 13 20, 27; Feb 3; Feb. 10; Feb. 17, 24.
Volleyball returns home after six-game road stretch
The Winthrop volleyball team returns to the court this weekend looking to gain momentum in the conference as the Eagles end a six-match road swing with matches at High Point and Campbell.
The Eagles enter the weekend with an 11-8 overall record and 2-3 mark in the Big South. Winthrop is coming off a 3-0 sweep of the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs last Saturday after falling in four sets to UNC Asheville Friday.
Alina Sopizhuk and Irene Ojukwu continue to battle for the team lead in kills as theyve recorded 231 and 229 respectively. Rachel Lenz is not far behind with 200 kills this season. Lenz is currently hitting .322 on the season which ranks her third in the conference. Jessie Vicics 11.73 assists per set continues to lead the conference and ranks her ninth overall in Division I.
Winthrop will take on the High Point Panthers Friday evening at 7 p.m. inside the Millis Center. High Point is 9-11 on the season and 3-2 in the Big South. The Panthers split their two matches last weekend at home, falling to Radford in five sets before defeating Liberty 3-0.
Winthrop defeated the Panthers last season inside the Winthrop Coliseum in a five-set thriller after the Eagles dropped the first two sets. High Point last defeated Winthrop in 2010.
Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. the Eagles will take on the Campbell Camels in Buises Creek, NC. Campbell is 11-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference and is on a three-match losing streak. The Camels fell at home to Liberty and Radford last weekend with the squads last victory coming at Charleston Southern on October 4.
Winthrop leads the overall series with the Camels 13-6 and has defeated Campbell each of the last two years.
The Eagles will return to the Winthrop Coliseum for the first time since September 28 when they host Radford at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 25.
