Senior running back Kameron Dawkins recorded zero catches and three touchdowns Friday night as the Broome Centurions (6-2, 3-0 in region) swept their Chester hosts 23-15 on the Cyclones homecoming night.
Dawkins (24;145 yards) did all his work on the ground Friday night, combining with junior Desmond Anderson for just under 250 yards of rushing to complete a priceless away victory that will put Broome in contention for this years region championship.
Every game in this region is real tough, but we came out of this one strong, said Broome head coach Jet Turner of his team. Theyre playing hard so theyre really gaining some confidence.
Chester had won last years matchup at Broome, which led to their own region championship in 2012, but now slip to 3-5 on the season with Fridays loss and 1-2 against their 3-AAA opponents in 2013.
Dawkins picked up two touchdowns in the opening half from 2- and 4-yard runs, respectively, to open his scoring account. Chesters Lorenzo White (9;24 yards) also scored early in the second frame, but had a timid game returning from an arm injury that took him out of last weeks loss against Woodruff.
Dawkins put the final score on the board with a juking run on the right side to increase the Centurion lead to 11 in the third quarter. Despite Chesters gamble at inserting pace in the quarterback position with receiver Quan Caldwell, he and starter Tommy Sanders went 4-14 in the air for 54 yards in the second half.
Although Broomes sophomore quarterback Hunter Weber failed to complete a pass, the Centurions run-laden offense paid off in spades. Dawkins accounted for over half of his teams yardage on the ground in the win.
I just did whatever I could do to help the team, Dawkins said after the game. Im real tired, but I gotta do what Coach tells me to do. 3-0, were working hard and hard works paying off.
