Dawkins’ 3 TDs propel Broome over Chester Cyclones

Herald correspondentOctober 19, 2013

Senior running back Kameron Dawkins recorded zero catches and three touchdowns Friday night as the Broome Centurions (6-2, 3-0 in region) swept their Chester hosts 23-15 on the Cyclones’ homecoming night.

Dawkins (24;145 yards) did all his work on the ground Friday night, combining with junior Desmond Anderson for just under 250 yards of rushing to complete a priceless away victory that will put Broome in contention for this year’s region championship.

“Every game in this region is real tough, but we came out of this one strong,” said Broome head coach Jet Turner of his team. “They’re playing hard so they’re really gaining some confidence.”

Chester had won last year’s matchup at Broome, which led to their own region championship in 2012, but now slip to 3-5 on the season with Friday’s loss and 1-2 against their 3-AAA opponents in 2013.

Dawkins picked up two touchdowns in the opening half from 2- and 4-yard runs, respectively, to open his scoring account. Chester’s Lorenzo White (9;24 yards) also scored early in the second frame, but had a timid game returning from an arm injury that took him out of last week’s loss against Woodruff.

Dawkins put the final score on the board with a juking run on the right side to increase the Centurion lead to 11 in the third quarter. Despite Chester’s gamble at inserting pace in the quarterback position with receiver Quan Caldwell, he and starter Tommy Sanders went 4-14 in the air for 54 yards in the second half.

Although Broome’s sophomore quarterback Hunter Weber failed to complete a pass, the Centurion’s run-laden offense paid off in spades. Dawkins accounted for over half of his team’s yardage on the ground in the win.

“I just did whatever I could do to help the team,” Dawkins said after the game. “I’m real tired, but I gotta do what Coach tells me to do. 3-0, we’re working hard and hard work’s paying off.”
