Saturday, when I finished reading the front page, I wondered how many other readers would to be moved to write their best Barry Byers memories! All day long I have been reliving my son Paul Batt’s days playing Dixie League Baseball on Barry Byers’ team.
Paul was in 5th grade and we were very new to the South. Paul's father became a leukemia patient at Charlotte’s Carolina Memorial Hospital. Since I had no family here to help, I asked a nice lady if we could “carpool” our boys to the games, only I would be in Charlotte! A neighbor opened her door as a fill-in for a grandmother! Paul got to all the games!
Barry learned of the home problems of his 10-year-old player. One day he had all the boys on the team, sign a “get well” baseball for Paul to take to his Dad, who was too sick to attend the games!
Nearly 30 years later I met Barry Byers, and he asked for my son, calling him by name ... after all those years! I told him Paul was now living in Taiwan, teaching English to the Chinese. I’m thinking he thought that was a good choice for Paul!
