The South Pointe girls’ golf team won the Upper State Class AAAA tournament Monday afternoon at Three Pines Golf Club near Spartanburg, and led the eight-team qualifying field for next week’s two-day tournament which will decide the state champion.

The Stallions turned in a team score of 309, which was two strokes more than their effort when they won the Region 3-AAAA tournament last week. Spartanburg was 10 strokes behind in second place. Wade Hampton of Greenville and Easley tied for third at 327.

The Lancaster Bruins qualified fifth at 333, with Spring Valley 10 strokes behind in the sixth spot. Dorman was eighth at 349, while Mauldin finished at 360. Fort Mill carded a 392, while York turned in a 408. Neither of them qualified for next week’s tournament, which will be held at Willow Creek Golf Club in Greenville.

Jodee Tindal paced the Stallions with a 75. Jaelyn Tindal fired a 77, while Chandler Case carded a 78, and Whitney Carter turned in a 79.

“Winning this is a first for South Pointe,” said coach Kimberly Case. “We had four scores below 80 today. I am so proud of them.”

South Pointe finished fourth in last year’s state tournament, and Kimberly Case is hoping that this year’s team can make a serious challenge to win it all.

“We have a lot of confidence right now,” said Case. “The competition next week over 36 holes will be very good. We have improved a lot, and I feel good about what we can do.”

The competition next week will be challenging as both Lexington and Bluffton will field strong teams from the lower state.

“It will be a battle next week,” Kimberly Case said. “Winning the Upper State tournament shows improvement for us over last year. I just hope we can continue the improvement and do better than our finish from a year ago.”

Northwestern’s Kelsey Becknell qualified for the Upper State tournament by virtue of her strong showing in the Region 3-AAAA tournament last week. She carded an 88 on Monday, but did not qualify as an individual for next week’s tournament.
